Today a new era of fillers has arrived. Hyaluronic acid compounds have been further crossed linked, resulting in a thicker product. By modifying existing chemical compounds it has increased their versatility, their indication, and their duration. Juvederm XC Ultra Plus and Voluma XC now can add volume to cheeks, frown lines, and facial creases. They contain their own local anesthetic to decrease injection discomfort. When placed deeply in the areas, they give a lifting effect that can persist for one, even up to two years. Radiesse by Mertz Aesthetics, is a calcium hydroxyapatite filler. This has similar properties and comes packaged in a larger volume of product in each syringe.
Juvederm is smooth gel wrinkle filler typically used to treat prominent facial creases and folds, typically the nasolabial folds that travel from each side of your nose to the corners of your mouth. This non-surgical treatment lasts for up to one year, and is suitable for all skin colors and types. Made from hyaluronic acid, a natural component of healthy skin, Juvederm works by restoring volume of your skin that has been depleted.
Is Juvederm right for you?
Juvederm is FDA approved for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Plastic surgeons have also found it to be effective for filling out thin lips and the hollow areas around the eyes and near the top of the nose. In some cases, Juvederm has also been used for restoring volume to the cheekbones and mid-face.
The Juvederm Procedure
Dr. Peterson will decide the best placement for Juvederm after carefully evaluating the areas that exhibit wrinkles or creases. Areas to be treated are numbed with a topical anesthetic to make the procedure comfortable; Juvederm is then injected with a very fine needle to correct the contour irregularities present on your skin.
What to expect after treatment with Juvederm
Results of Juvederm typically last 9-12 months. You will need touch-ups and repeat treatments to maintain the volume and wrinkle correction you desire over the years.
Risks or Side Effects With Juvederm
Hyaluronic acid fillers are effective and have proven to be very safe when administered in a medical setting by a qualified and trained doctor. Juvederm offers another advantage in that you don’t need to be pre-tested for a possible allergic reaction to it, since it’s biodegradable and doesn’t contain ingredients that cause an allergic reaction in most people. We will learn about your medical history and ask you some important health questions to make sure Juvederm is a good option for you.
Side effects from Juvederm are usually minor and temporary. You may have some redness and swelling at the treatment sites for a few days, along with mild bruising or skin firmness. It’s not unusual for uneven swelling to occur, with one side more prominent than the other. If you are concerned about side effects, make sure you ask for more information during your appointment.
The older we get, the more it shows on our face not just with lines and wrinkles, but on our cheeks. Loss of fullness in our cheeks is a tell tale sign of aging, but like wrinkles it can be corrected. Voluma Injections are a gel treatment that adds volume and a subtle lift to your cheeks for up to two years.
Having a full and beautiful smile often has a significant impact on how confident a person feels about their overall appearance. If you are unhappy with the look of your smile, it can be very apparent when communicating with others or while taking pictures. Thinning lips are a common concern for many women and can be the result of several factors, including genetics and age. Dr. Robert Peterson can perform a customized lip enhancement procedure to provide you with the fullness you want for your lips.
Dr. Robert Peterson performs lip enhancement using injections of fillers or excess fat to give Houston women and men results that are designed for their facial features and appear completely natural. Your consultation will help to determine what are the best lip fillers for you and which method of lip enhancement will be best for your unique situation.
Preparing for Lip Enhancement
Dr. Robert Peterson performs lip enhancement both as a non-surgical procedure with fillers and by using fat transfer for a natural lip augmentation. Other plastic surgeons use silicone implants, which can result in an unnatural appearance of the lips.
During your consultation, Dr. Robert Peterson will listen to your goals and expectations to help determine the best lip enhancement method for you. The two of you will also discuss the size you want for your lips as well as how to maintain a more natural appearance.
With the fat transfer method, Dr. Robert Peterson will perform your procedure under either local or general anesthesia. The necessary fat cells will be grafted from another area of the body using minimal liposuction. The harvested fat cells are then prepared for injection and then used to enhance your lips to your goal size. With the filler method, Dr. Robert Peterson will use non-surgical dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm, to provide you with your desired outcome.
Both methods Dr. Robert Peterson uses for lip enhancement have provided many patients with beautiful, natural-looking results.
After Lip Enhancement
There is very little to no recovery time required following your lip enhancement. If your lip enhancement was performed using fillers, you should be able to return to your daily routine fairly quickly. Fat transfer lip enhancement may require a few days of rest depending on where the fat cells were grafted from.
Your lips may feel a bit tight or sore immediately following your treatment and it is normal that at first, they look slightly larger than you expected. As your body absorbs some of the injected fat or filler, your final results will begin to show.
Patients who have undergone a lip enhancement procedure at Plastic Surgery Houston are often thrilled with their results. By achieving a natural-looking fullness of the lips, you will likely feel more confident about your overall appearance and smile more often.
How much does Lip Enhancement Cost?
The price of lip augmentation procedures (both surgical and non-surgical) depends on the specific needs and goals of each individual patient.
If you think lip enhancement may be the right treatment for you, we invite you to give our office a call to schedule your consultation with Dr. Robert Peterson.

Why consider lip enhancement?
If you are bothered by the appearance of thin, lined or asymmetrical lips, cosmetic treatments can address your concerns and help you feel more confident in your smile. Specific changes that a skilled cosmetic surgeon can make through lip enhancement include:
- Restore volume to thin or aging lips
- Smooth vertical lip lines
- Improve symmetry between the upper and lower lip
- Refine the shape of thin or flat lips
What are my treatment options?
Cosmetic surgeons use a variety of approaches to help patients improve their lip appearance, ranging from temporary filler injections to lip implant surgery. Many patients choose to start with a temporary treatment and later progress to a longer-lasting treatment.
Dermal Filler Injections
Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane products, are a popular non-surgical option, offering temporary lip enhancement at an affordable cost. When administered by an experienced provider, dermal fillers can last 4 to 12 months and achieve soft, natural-looking results. Depending on the product, fillers can boost lip volume, enhance lip shape, and smooth vertical lip lines (perioral rhytids).
Benefits of dermal lip fillers
- Treatments take only 15 to 30 minutes
- A skilled cosmetic surgeon can adjust the amount of filler used to achieve results with precision
- Little to no downtime is needed
- Improvements are usually noticeable immediately after treatment
- Results are final within 2 weeks
- Side effects are typically mild and include temporary bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site. Serious complications are extremely rare when treatment is performed by a qualified provider
- Treatments must be repeated periodically to maintain results
- Beautiful, natural results require a provider with immense skill and experience
- A very small percentage of patients may be allergic to ingredients in manufactured fillers
Autologous fat injections, also called fat grafting, use fat from another part of your body as a lip filler. Fat grafting typically involves liposuction surgery on a different area of the body, and the procedure can be done without incisions on the face or lips. Fat injections should only be performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon with specialized training in fat transfer procedures. With such a provider, fat injections can achieve a beautiful augmented lip contour that looks and feels very natural and last for years.
Benefits of fat injections for the lips
- Fat looks and feels very natural in the lips
- Results can last for many years; once final results are achieved, you should not need to repeat treatment
- Risk of allergic reaction is close to zero
- No incisions are needed in the lips
- Fat injections require a surgical component
- A safe procedure and beautiful, natural results require a specially trained, highly experienced cosmetic surgeon
- Several days of downtime may be required, depending on the extent of liposuction performed
- Some injected fat may not survive in its new location, possibly requiring additional treatment to achieve the desired result
- Unsatisfactory results can be difficult to reverse (prevent this by choosing a qualified cosmetic surgeon)
Lip implants can achieve a semi-permanent lip enhancement for those desiring a more lasting solution with minimal maintenance. Implants are made from a soft, pliable silicone rubber or biodegradable substance and are best for patients desiring a noticeable increase in lip volume.
Experienced cosmetic surgeons typically perform lip implant surgery using local anesthesia, inserting implants through tiny incisions hidden in the corners of the mouth.
Benefits of lip implants
- Results can last for many years
- When performed by a skilled cosmetic surgeon, lip implant surgery can take less than 30 minutes to perform and leave virtually undetectable scars
- Most patients require only 1 to 3 days of downtime
- A safe procedure and beautiful results require a highly experienced, qualified cosmetic surgeon
- Another surgery is required to remove lip implants
- Implants are not effective for smoothing fine lip lines
- All surgery carries some risk, including infection and bleeding

Kybella is a non-surgical injectable for reducing moderate to severe fat below the chin, the area commonly known as a “double chin.” The injection contains a naturally occurring substance in the body, deoxycholic acid, which helps the body absorb fat cells.
Restore fullness to your face, increase skin thickness and correct even the deepest lines and wrinkles with a long lasting lactic acid polymer. Using biodegradable poly-L-lactic acid, Sculptra is a non-invasive treatment that improves the look of skin for up to two years.
Asclera is a sclerosing agent that is injected into the vein. It works by damaging the endothelium, the cells lining the inside of blood vessels. This causes blood platelets and cellular debris to attach to the lining of the vessels; eventually, cellular debris and platelets cause the blood vessel to clot.
Radiesse is a wrinkle filler that is long-lasting and effective for treating a variety of age-related imperfections. This popular filler is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) – tiny calcium spheres suspended in gel. When injected, Radiesse acts like a scaffolding for your skin, restoring lost volume and correcting wrinkles or folds.
Is Radiesse right for you?
Radiesse is FDA approved for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, typically the nasolabial folds. Plastic surgeons have used Radiesse in off label applications such as treatment of sunken cheeks, marionette lines or depressed scars.
Before your treatment, Dr. Peterson evaluates the areas that need to be corrected. The skin is cleansed and a topical anesthetic or ice pack is applied to make the injection comfortable. Radiesse is then injected with a fine needle into a specific depth of the skin. You will see an immediate correction that lasts an average of 10-14 months.
Radiesse is a popular filler because of its durability, ease of use and low incidence of side effects. Possible adverse reactions include mild irritation, edema, swelling, itching, discoloration or tenderness. Ask the doctor for more information if you are concerned about side effects.
I am pleased to offer Derma Sculpt blunt tipped micro cannulas to inject all fillers. Widely used in Europe and our west coast, the small 25 gauge cannula moves easily through the facial structures in an almost painless fashion. Precise filling of areas superficial and deep can be more easily accomplished. Treatments are less painful to the patient and because the cannula is blunt and not a sharp needle, it has less chance for bruising post treatment. With the simple application of ice to the local area pretreatment, the introduction of the cannula is easy and greatly diminishes the number of “needle sticks”. You will be amazed at the difference the DERMASCUPLT micro cannula makes and you will never want conventional needle injection again! Virtually all areas of the face and lips can now be enhanced by office injections not requiring surgical procedures.
The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name Botox®, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Studies have also suggested that Botox is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes.
When you smile, frown, squint, or even chew – actually, when you make any sort of facial movement – you may be contributing the the cause of one of the most common signs of aging: wrinkles. Wrinkles can make you appear tired or even angry when you are not. Wrinkles can make an otherwise attractive face look old before its time. One of the quickest and safest remedies to eliminate wrinkles is an injection of Botox, also referred to as botulinum toxin.
Botox is, quite simply, one of the most important and revolutionary tools to be introduced to the field of facial rejuvenation in many years. Aside from a facelift or other more involved forms of plastic surgery, Botox represents the most effective means of temporarily reducing or eliminating frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet near the eyes, and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Additionally, studies have also suggested that Botox is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and muscle spasms.
Botox injections can be combined with other cosmetic skin procedures such as chemical peels, dermal fillers, or microdermabrasion to further improve the results of the procedure. Even better news: this combination of therapies can even help to prevent the formation of new lines and wrinkles.
The treatment usually takes less than 15 minutes. The number of Botox injections you need will depend on a number of factors, which include your unique facial features as well as the number, location, and degree of your wrinkles. Crow’s feet, for example, generally require two or three injections. To effectively reduce furrows above your brow, it could take five or more injections.
It is also important to note that Botox injections can provide excellent results when used as a treatment for teeth grinding problems, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders, and the associated jaw tension and pain. In this application, Botox is used to weaken the muscles involved in teeth grinding and jaw clenching, thereby producing relief, usually after just a single treatment. In a related fashion, Botox can also be used to calm spastic muscles in the face which can cause embarrassing tics and twitching.
No anesthesia is required for a Botox injection, and there is no down time or recovery time required. You may notice results within a few days following the procedure, but keep in mind that it can take up to a week to see the full effect of the treatment. Typically, these beneficial results will last for three to four months. After that, additional treatments may be required to maintain your desired appearance.
Please contact Dr. Peterson today at (281) 836-4576 for more information regarding Botox injections, or any of the other plastic surgery procedures offered at his office in Houston, TX. A new and better you is only a phone call away!
Who should consider Botox?
Botox Cosmetic is indicated for the temporary correction of moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines) associated with corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity in patients 18 to 65 years of age. If you exhibit lines on the smooth part of your forehead above and between the brows (the glabella), you should consider treatment with Botox Cosmetic.
Botox Cosmetic is contraindicated if the patient exhibits an infection at the proposed injection site(s) and or has a known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation or to any of the components in the formulation. Do not undergo Botox treatment if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you have experienced an allergic reaction to another product containing botulinum toxin. Ask your plastic surgeon about the possible side effects of Botox.
Similar to Botox, Dysport is a botulinum toxin used to reduce wrinkles for youthful, smooth skin. Unlike Botox, Dysport spreads more throughout the facial muscles for a more natural effect and less injections per session.
Nothing beats natural-looking, youthful skin. Neurotoxins are the only ingredient in Xeomin to reduce the chance of regular users to stop responding to their treatment. Xeomin relaxes facial muscles to soften wrinkles for two to three months between treatments.
